Welcome to BreastSurgANZ.
I am delighted to have taken over in May this year as President of our society. For those of you who I don't know yet I am a breast surgeon in Perth Western Australia and a cancer researcher at the University of Western Australia.
I am joined on the executive by stalwarts David Littlejohn and David Walters as Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer and we have fabulous new council members to re-vitalise us - along with now over 360 members. I look forward to serving you for the next 3 years and consolidating the work that has been done and growing us into an even more successful organisation.
BreastSurgANZ has been going from strength to strength over the last 3 years, mainly due to the hard work of our immediate past president Prof Andrew Spillane, the hard working council and our small but fantastic staff led by CEO Diane Harapin (ceo@ breastsurganz.org). Our mission is to ensure all of those affected by breast cancer have the best possible care.
The BQA - our audit of practice - continues to underpin our ability to deliver the very highest quality care to patients with breast cancer throughout Australia and New Zealand. The BQA is being strengthened by the addition of oncoplastic and reconstruction outcomes and we hope into the future, patient reported outcomes.
We deliver a world class training programme for breast surgeons supported by a highly competitive 2 year training scheme, oncoplastic and other courses and workshops, a Masters program through the University of Sydney and mentoring and support for young breast surgeons.
We are planning more breast conferences in the coming 2 years and will post plans on the website as soon as they are finalised - to date our conferences in conjunction with partners such as ASBD and BCI/Leura have proven incredibly popular.
We aim to be the voice for breast cancer in Australia and New Zealand , working with our partners in other craft groups such as the Association of Plastic Surgeons, with governments and with patient advocacy groups and research groups. We are active in obtaining Medicare item numbers for things such as breast MRI and oncoplastic procedures to ensure our patients have access to the latest management equitably and affordably.
With the Foundation for Breast Cancer Care we are contributing to efforts in research, to improve surgical care of breast cancer patients especially those least advantaged.
We are here for you, and this website is a vehicle for communication as are our social media sites. Please feedback to us any additional services the membership wants from the society and consumer feedback is also welcome.
Thank you - I look forward to working with you all,
Prof Christobel Saunders
