Position: 2 Positions - 1. Breast + General Surgery Fellow; 2. Oncoplastic Breast Fellow


There are two positions available:
Position 1 includes general surgery and is suitable for a 1st or 2nd year trainee
Position 2 is specialised in Breast surgery, with a focus on more advanced oncoplastic techniques. This position is suitable for a second year trainee.>

Position 1 - This position would suit a 1st or 2nd year trainee interested in breast and general surgery.

THE Breast Fellowship offers the fellow the opportunity to work in one of New Zealand’s busiest breast and general surgical services. The successful applicant will be exposed to a broad range of breast disease, benign and malignant. The unit sees 250-350 breast cancers per annum.

Multidisciplinary meetings for breast are twice a week, symptomatic and screening. Opportunity exists to work in the screening programme. The unit is served by 5 breast and with 16 general surgeons in total. The service has links with Middlemore Hospital's Plastic Surgical Unit. Breast reconstruction
is performed largely at North Shore Hospital, and there is ample exposure to all types of breast reconstruction (expander implant, TRAM free pedicled, Lat Dorsi). Level 2 oncoplastic procedures are performed regularly.

This fellowship is linked with an exposure to Endocrine (Thyroid/ Parathyroid/ Adrenal), melanoma,head and neck surgery, and general surgery, so is suitable to those that want to continue with general surgery.

All on-call commitment for general surgery is expected. The fellow will staff the acute theatre and take surgical admissions every third Friday (there are 3 other Fellows in other subspecialties) and 1 in 4 Tuesday evenings, with the backup of a senior colleague. There is a service commitment to LA skin cancer. The fellow is expected to conduct daily ward rounds with junior staff (including advanced trainees in general surgery), and be involved with teaching of junior staff. There is ample opportunity to conduct research.

BREAKDOWN OF HOURS – 􏰉 16 hours approx Outpatient clinics, 16 hours Operating lists, and On-call requirements - On call for general surgery 1:4 Fridays and one Tuesday every 3 months. On call as a consultant with senior consultant rostered 2nd call as back up.
PRIVATE CONSULTING – Supplementary consulting sessions in the Specialist’s private rooms by arrangement -NO
MDT – (Multidisciplinary management of breast cancer patients) - YES
ACADEMIC & RESEARCH – any Academic involvement and / or Research activities available to the trainee or required – YES
FUNDED 1 year FTE role commencing on RACS start date early January 2020 - YES
SALARY will be Full time salary equivalent to Senior Registrar salary (or greater) and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply – YES

Position 2 - is purely breast surgery with a focus on more advanced oncoplastic techniques. This would suit someone in their second year of fellowship.

This Fellowship is aided by a grant from the New Zeland Breast Cancer Foundation. The Fellow will be working in the same unit but will focus purely on breast disease.

Opportunity exists to work in the screening programme. The service has links with Middlemore Hospitals Plastic surgical unit. Breast reconstruction
is performed largely at North Shore Hospital and there is ample exposure to all types of breast reconstruction (expander implant, TRAM free pedicled, Lat Dorsi). Level 2 oncoplastic procedures are performed regularly under the leadership of Miss Katherine Gale. Katherine has completed a Oncoplastic Fellowship at the Nottingham Breast Unit with Doug MacMillan, and continues to have a close relationship with that unit.

There is an expectation to conduct research with the aims of publications in peer-reviewed journals and present papers at national/ international meetings.

There is a close link to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.
There is no general surgery or on call component to this position.

FUNDED 1 year role commencing on RACS start date early February 2020 - NO, NOTE THIS IS A 1 year 0.5 FTE role
SALARY will be Full time salary equivalent to Senior Registrar salary (or greater) and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply - NO , only 0.5 FTE is funded without call, salary will be $80,000 and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply *
