This position would suit a 1st year trainee.
Breast Fellowship offers breast surgeons the opportunity to work in one of New Zealand’s busiest breast services. The successful applicant will be exposed to a broad range of breast disease benign and malignant. The unit sees 250-300 breast cancers per annum.
Multidisciplinary meetings for breast are twice a week symptomatic and screening. Opportunity exists to work in the screening programme. The unit is served by 4 breast surgeons as well as the Middlemore plastic surgical service. Breast reconstruction is performed at both North Shore Hospital and Middlemore Hospitals and there is ample exposure to all types of breast reconstruction (expander implant, TRAM free pedicled, Lat Dorsi). The fellow can also choose experience in other areas particularly Endocrine (Thyroid/ Parathyroid/ Adrenal with training in thyroid and parathyroid ultrasound) and melanoma and head and neck surgery.
All on-call commitment for general surgery is expected, with the backup of a senior colleague the fellow will staff the acute theatre and take surgical admissions every third Friday (there are 3 other Fellows in other subspecialties). The fellow is expected to conduct daily ward rounds with junior staff (including advanced trainees in general surgery), be involved with teaching of junior staff and conduct research with the aims of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presenting papers at national/ international meetings. The 1 year fellowship will prepare the candidate for a consultant position as a General and Breast/ Endocrine consultant or for future specialisation as a dedicated breast oncoplastic position.
