Position: Breast and Endocrine Surgical Fellow


This position is suitable for a first year trainee.

This position will provide advanced training in the full range of Breast and Endocrine Surgery. The post will involve on-call for General Surgery at a Fellow level.

There is an expectation that the successful applicant is skilled and confident in abdominal/emergency General Surgery, and there will be ample opportunity to build on those skills during the fellowship.

The Unit consists of six surgeons, performing more than 250 breast cancer and 150 thyroid operations each year. There is scope for oncoplastic training, with tissue expander, implant based and muscle transfer reconstruction, and collaboration with the Plastic Surgery Department. The Unit is closely allied with the Strathfield Breast Centre with integrated data collection and weekly Breast Tumour Board Meetings.

There is also significant General Surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery exposure. Excellent opportunities are available for clinically based research. Involvement in teaching of SET trainees, JMOs, students and paramedical staff is expected.

The position is full time, based at Concord Hospital, under the award classification of Senior Registrar.


SUMMARY HOSPITAL INFORMATION
Breast Oncoplastic Surgery: Level 1 oncoplastic 20+ cases, volume displacement/replacement and mammoplasty, symmetry procedures. Level 2 up to 10 cases
Breast Reconstruction Surgery: 15 - 20 reconstructions: implant based and lipofilling, also nipple reconstruction. Autologous tissue transfer together with plastics
General and Other Surgery: This position will provide advanced training in the full range of Breast and Endocrine surgery. In addition to the breast surgery, the Unit performs over 150 thyroidectomies/parathyroidectimies per year as well as adrenalectomies. There is also significant General Surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery exposure. The post will involve weekly on-call for General Surgery at a Fellow leave. There is an expectation that the successful applicant is skilled an confident in abdominal/emergency General Surgery. There will be ample opportunity to build on those skills during the fellowship
Breakdown of Hours: Full time based at Concord Hospital; 4 x full day operating lists per week (2 are concurrent), and half day outpatient clinic weekly. The general surgery on-call commitment is each Monday and 1 weekend in 4.
Private Consulting: opportunity to sit in on private consulting by arrangement
MDT: MDT weekly meetings (public/private combination) plus monthly endocrine MDT meetings. Other meetings include weekly Surgical Grand Rounds and monthly Journal Club.
Academic & Research: Strong support for research, Fellows are encouraged to do the Masters of Breast Surgery (University of Sydney)
Funded: 1 year FTE role commencing early February 2022
Salary: will be Full time salary equivalent to Senior Registrar salary (or greater) and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply
