BREASTSURGANZ POSITION STATEMENT ON CANCELLATION OF NON-CRITICAL BREAST SURGERY

BreastSurgANZ strongly supports the RACS statement issued yesterday which is critical of the Federal Government’s decision to extend the time for cancellation for non-critical surgery to 1 April 2020.

The BreastSurgANZ Council strongly recommends to its members that all non-urgent breast surgery cases are cancelled until COVID-19 is under control.   We support those surgeons who are refusing to operate on non-critical cases prior to the extended deadline, and the initial Federal Government decision to cancel non-urgent cases effective immediately.  This position is clearly in the paramount interests of patient and staff safety in the current extraordinary circumstances.

See link to the full RACS statement.

BreastSurgANZ will shortly be releasing further guidance to Breast Surgeons regarding cases suitable for proceeding or deferral, including alternative treatment options (resources permitting).
