Position Description

This fellowship is based at Nepean Hospital a major tertiary teaching hospital located in Penrith, which is part of Nepean Blue Mountains Health District. The fellow will have ample opportunities to develop and consolidate their clinical and operative skills in the diagnosis and management of benign and malignant breast disease.

The Unit consists of 3 Breast Surgeons and 3 Endocrine Surgeons, and two General Surgeons and one registrar (SET 3-5) and an intern. The Unit offers a wide variety of breast surgical procedures with a strong oncoplastic and reconstructive component involving tissue expanders, implants and flaps.

The fellow is expected to actively participate in weekly breast MDT and weekly clinics. They also have the opportunity to attend the private rooms of the surgeons to gain clinical exposure in assessing and managing patients with new diagnosis of Breast cancer.

There is considerable Endocrine surgical exposure with fellows having the opportunity to perform and assist in thyroid, parathyroid and some head and neck surgery. There is also monthly Endocrine MDT and weekly endocrine educational activities combined with the Medical Endocrine unit.

The fellow are expected to undertake research activities through the Whiteley-Martin Research centre associated with University of Sydney. The fellow can also gain teaching experience by providing regular tutorials to Medical students and contribute to SET training program within Nepean Hospital.

In addition to the role Breast and Endocrine fellowship, the position also involves taking part in the Acute Surgical Unit oncall roster. This will ensure that the fellows maintain their broad General surgical skills.

Summary Hospital Information

Breast Oncoplastic Surgery:

40% of cases are Level 2 Oncoplastic operations

Breast Reconstruction Surgery:

30% breast reconstructive, prophylactic and symmetrization surgery

General and Other Surgery:

10 - 15% endocrine surgery (thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy)

Breakdown of hours:

Outpatient Hours: 12 hours per week; operating lists: 18 hours per week; On call requirements at least once or twice a week and may vary with ASU requirements; weekend ward rounds 1 in 3

Private Consulting:

Consulting rooms are open to Fellows to attend

MDT:

Weekly MDTs, Fellow to coordinate and present cases

Academic & Research:

Clinical research opportunities are highly encouraged

Funded:

1 year Full Time Equivalent role commencing early February 2026

Salary:

Will be Full time salary equivalent to Senior Registrar salary (or greater) and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply. This is a fixed term position . NO payment for overtime or on call.

Further Information:

All level 1 breast operations are performed. Data support and research team available through cancer care centre and University of Sydney. Highly encouraged to attend Breast Screen Assessment Clinics
