The Breast/Endocrine Surgical Fellow at the Mater Hospital is a fully funded position through Mater Health Services. The Mater campus is an enriched surgical environment with a tertiary referral Obstetric hospital on site, as well as a large private hospital co-located. In the Breast and Endocrine Unit, there are six surgeons, (four oncoplastic and two oncologic), a Fellow, a SET Trainee, two Interns and four full time breast care nurses.
The Fellow’s role involves an independent operating list as well as operating with the consultant surgeons. The Fellow is also actively involved in teaching of junior medical officers and students via Mater Medical Education Unit and University of Queensland.
The unit performs level 1 and level 2 oncoplastic procedures, with exposure to complex Breast Cancer Care: Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic, Multidisciplinary Oncoplastic Clinic and BreastScreen Queensland. The Plastic and Reconstructive Unit shares prosthetic reconstructions, and performs immediate autologous reconstructions.
Office ultrasound, SPY Camera, DaVinci Robot are all available. Saviscout is to be introduced this year. There is a general surgery on-call commitment, one-in-three, with the participation of the Fellow being that of a junior consultant with the on-call PHO/Trainee reporting to the Fellow.
Mater has a fortnightly joint plastics/breast oncoplastic MDT Reconstructions – prosthetic go to the Breast Service LICAP, TDAP, AICAP, adaptive mammaplasty, Lat dorsi, symmetrisation.
The Unit also has a significant component of endocrine surgery, especially thyroid and parathyroid, and services the busy obstetric endocrinology departments. There is also a component of sarcoma and melanoma surgery. There is a monthly Endocrine MDT shared with Endocrinology.

Breast Oncoplastic Surgery:
300 new cancers per year, 20% oncoplastic technique involved
Breast Reconstruction Surgery:
Approximately 20 per year for breast service, 70 per year for plastics
General and Other Surgery:
Thyroid, parathyroid greater than 50 per year. Melanoma and Sarcoma. General On Call
Breakdown of hours:
4 x Outpatient clinics, 5 x Operating lists; 1:3 General on call, fellow list 1 per fortnight, OPD x 4 per week, OT x 5 per week

Funded one (1) Full Time Equivalent (FTE) role commencing in February 2025
Salary:
Full time salary equivalent to Senior Registrar salary (or greater) and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply.
