Position Description

This position is mostly based in the lower North Shore of Sydney and enables the successful applicant to work within a dynamic high volume breast cancer service including breast oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery based in private practice but with weekly public hospital operating lists.

“Outpatient” experience will be from parallel consulting in the specialists’ private rooms, which are well resourced including ultrasound facilities. The position also involves gaining experience in melanoma surgery within the framework of the Melanoma Institute Australia – the largest melanoma unit in the world. There is work with others within MIA depending on the PFT's preference.

There is also exposure to multidisciplinary soft tissue sarcoma care and other aspects of surgical oncology. A feature of the position will be short attachments with other members of the multidisciplinary team to broaden the understanding of multidisciplinary management of cancer patients. The fellow will be expected to participate in the academic activities of the breast and melanoma units and expected to participate in the Graduate Certificate of Breast Surgery course

The breast surgeons Kylie Snook (Hornsby Hospital), Samriti Sood (Northern Beaches and RNSH) and Andrew Spillane (RNSH) manage over 450 new breast cancer cases between them each year. They attend the same 2nd weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and share a common consultation suite.

Within the unit there is a data manager and full time public health post-doc researcher both of whom are keen to assist with breast research activities. The MIA has a comprehensive database with data management and statistical support available. One in six first call general surgery take at the RNSH public hospitals is part of the position to maintain general surgical skills and judgement.
