Position Description

The Breast/Endocrine Surgical Fellow at the Mater Hospital is a fully funded position through Mater Health Services. The Mater campus is an enriched surgical environment with a tertiary referral Obstetric hospital on site, as well as a large private hospital co-located. In the Breast and Endocrine Unit, there are five surgeons, (three oncoplastic and two oncologic) , a Fellow, a SET Trainee, Intern and two full time breast care nurses.

The Fellow's role involves an independent operating list as well as operating with the consultant surgeons.

The unit performs level 1 and level 2 oncoplastic procedures, with exposure to complex Breast Cancer Care: Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic, Multidisciplinary Oncoplastic Clinic and BreastScreen Queensland. The Plastic and Reconstructive Unit shares prosthetic reconstructions, and to perform synchronous autologous reconstructions. Office ultrasound, SPY Camera, DaVinci Robot and Magseed are all available. There is a general surgery on-call commitment, one-in-four, with the participation of the Fellow being that of a junior consultant with the on-call PHO/Trainee reporting to the Fellow.

Mater has a fortnightly joint plastics/breast oncoplastic MDT Reconstructions - prosthetic go to the Breast Service LICAP, TDAP, AICAP, adaptive mammaplasty, Lat dorsi symmetrisation

The Unit also has a significant component of endocrine surgery, especially thyroid and parathyroid, and services the busy obstetric endocrinology departments. There is also a component of sarcoma and melanoma surgery.

The hospital is fully accredited for General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Plastics, OHNS, ICU, Gen Med, Anaesthetics training

Summary Hospital Information

Breast Oncoplastic Surgery:

300 new cancers per year, 50% oncoplastic technique involved

Breast Reconstruction Surgery:

approximately 20 per year for breast service, 50 per year for plastics

General and Other Surgery:

Thyroid, parathyroid greater than 50 per year. Melanoma and Sarcoma. General On Call 1/fortnight

Breakdown of hours:

4 x Outpatient clinics, 5 x Operating lists; 1:4 General on call, fellow list 1 / fortnight, OPD x 4/week, OT x 5/week

Nil

MDT:

Weekly oncology MDT, Fortnightly oncoplastic MDT, combined with plastics

Academic & Research:

Clinical and Bench research available (UQ affiliated), higher degree supervision, clinical Trials including Breast Cancer Trials group trials. 2 x breast care nurses.

Funded:

One (1) year FTE role or 0.9 FTE plus private assisting (fellows preference). Position commences February 2022

Salary:

is a Full time salary equivalent to Senior Registrar salary (or greater) and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply.
