The fellowship position provides training at a tertiary level in the Breast and Endocrine unit. The unit consists of 4 surgeons with high volume of Level 1 Oncoplastic procedures and significant Level 2 procedures. RBWH is a high volume breast unit with ample of opportunity for exposure to oncoplastic surgical technique, implant based reconstruction, pedicle flap reconstruction and now ROLLIS and IORT. Our trainee will have opportunity to work with plastic surgeon to get experience in tissue based reconstruction and exposure to our new research program “3D breast scaffold”.
The unit sees approximately 300 new cases per year and has significant endocrine case exposure if trainee is interested.
The Unit provides tertiary care to large areas of Queensland and specialises in management of complex cases.
The breast fellow will work alongside endocrine surgery fellow with opportunity to experience (by prearrangement) large volume of endocrine cases ranging from benign to complex thyroid malignancy, parathyroid surgery and adrenal surgery, including retroperitoneal adrenalectomy.
You will be involved in the general surgery on-call roster where you will provide cover at Consultant level.
The Unit provides ample opportunity for independent operating and research opportunities, with approximately 3 – 5 operating lists per week, 2 breast clinics per week and a fortnightly endocrine surgery clinic. Additional clinics include Familial breast cancer clinic, weekly breast MDT and monthly thyroid cancer MDT (optional).

Breast Oncoplastic Surgery:
Level 1 at least 100 and Level 2 at least 50
Breast Reconstruction Surgery:
Implant based reconstruction 50 to 60 per year
General and Other Surgery:
General Surgery 60 cases per year and endocrine surgery cases: by negotiation (minimum 50 per year)
Breakdown of hours:
On-call once per week. One weekend on call every 2 months. 11 sessions Breast OPD per month. At least 2 sessions of endocrine surgery OPD per month. 11 add day operating sessions per month

Trainees are encouraged to take up one research project and scientific presentation in their one year training program with the unit

Out trainee will have opportunity to work with a plastic surgeon to get experience in tissue based reconstruction. Mastectomy: 110 cases per year Axillary surgery: 200 cases (sentinel node and axilla clearance) Mastopexy/lipofilling: 10 to 15 per year
