Training Positions

SA – Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Adelaide)

Position:

Breast and Endocrine Fellowship (Breast Endocrine Unit)

Level:

First Year

Location:

Woodville Road, Woodville, SA

Position Description

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) specialist Breast Endocrine Surgical Unit deals with over 150 breast cancers and 200 major endocrine surgical cases per year. Four consultant surgeons are affiliated with the service, as well as BreastScreen SA. Two of our consultants hold a DDU qualification, fellows are encouraged to obtain an ASUM DDU or point of care ultrasound qualification.

A full range of breast cancer surgery is offered to patients. The serviced population includes the western metropolitan catchment, as well as the regional centres of Port Lincoln, Port Augusta and Mount Gambier. Comprehensive multi-disciplinary care (nursing, oncology, radiotherapy, genetics, pathology, radiology, pharmacy, gynaecology) is provided via weekly case management meetings. Outpatient care is delivered on site in a dedicated diagnostic and follow-up clinic.

Full oncoplastic and reconstructive breast services are provided using a bimodal specialty approach, coordinated with our Plastic surgical unit. Fellows will need to be involved in all aspects of this service delivery. The unit also runs a multi-disciplinary Breast Ovarian clinic, for the management of high risk/BRCA gene families.

Considerable prophylactic surgery is performed. Thyroid/parathyroid/adrenal surgery is performed as part of the endocrine surgical practice. Minimal access and laparoscopic approaches are a particular interest of the unit.

Fellows are expected to participate in research. A dedicated unit research project officer enhances this aspect of the role. There is an opportunity to complete a 12-month masters degree from the University of Adelaide in minimal access surgery, if desired.

Whilst no trauma care occurs at TQEH, the Breast Endocrine Fellow participates in the General Surgery Acute care roster (roughly 1 in 6). Fellows have the opportunity for independent consulting and operating, as well as supervision as new surgical skills and experience are acquired.
