Training Positions

Position Description

The position involves 12 months of specialist breast surgical training and research in breast cancer. Monash Breast Unit comprises of 8 specialist breast surgeons who are all members of BreastsurgANZ and many who are ASUM trained. There is an accredited general surgical registrar, Breast HMO and intern in the unit with support from specialist breast care nurses. Monash Breast Unit participates in the national breast audit.

Monash Health is the largest Victorian Health service and incorporates Moorabbin Hospital (main), Dandenong & Clayton Hospitals (Melbourne). The size of the screening service is over 58,000 screens. Monash Breast Unit treats over 450 new breast surgery cases per year.

The fellowship will include the following:

Outpatient experience

• Lorna Sisley Breast Clinic (3 sessions per month). This clinic serves symptomatic referrals, risk assessment and monitoring and follow up of benign and malignant conditions
• Breastscreen assessment clinic
• Breast oncology clinic
• Post operative clinic ( 2 clinics per week)
• Lymphoedema clinic (1 session per month)

Multidisciplinary Meeting

• Breastscreen radiology and pathology meeting weekly
• Breast oncology multidisciplinary meeting weekly
• Access to metastatic breast cancer MDT fortnightly
• Plastic reconstruction MDT 3 weekly

Operating Sessions

• Breast surgery occurs across 2 Monash Health campuses
• Routine breast surgery including oncoplastics is concentrated at Moorabbin Hospital with 5 - 6 lists per week
• 1-2 sessions with intraoperative radiotherapy per month
• 1 list per week precedes breast plastics unit
• Plastic breast reconstructions at Dandenong Hospital (6 lists per month) supported by breast surgeons
• Magseed localization will be introduced as routine
• Breast surgery research office which supports investigator
• Led research and study participation
• Opportunity to enrol in higher degree through Monash University Department of Surgery
• Potential to continue existing research in collaboration or develop 1 year project

Audit and Education

• Combined breast surgery and plastics reconstruction audit 6 monthly
• Breast surgery mortality and morbidity meeting monthly
• Journal Club/Special interest meeting weekly
• Melbourne Breast Surgery Journal Club quarterly
• Supervision and teaching of advanced surgical trainees, HMO, intern and medical students

The fellow position will be funded by Monash Health. It is a full time position at 86 hours a fortnight. There is potential to participate in an on-call roster for general surgery, and for private assisting.
