Position Description

This position offers excellent training in all aspects of breast and endocrine surgery in a Multidisciplinary setting. The successful applicant will gain extensive experience through working with both our Breast Surgery Unit (3-4 Breast Surgeons) and our Endocrine Surgery Unit (4-5 Endocrine Surgeons) with 8-9 theatre sessions per week.

The unit treats approximately 130 cancers per year treated within in a multidisciplinary setting. Three breast theatre sessions per week, multidisciplinary beast clinic and attendance at St Vincent's BreastScreen.

The Breast surgery unit provides experience in all aspects of the management of neoplastic & non-neoplastic breast disease through our weekly Breast Multidisciplinary Meeting & Breast Outpatient Clinic and involvement in St Vincent’s Breastscreen. Some of our surgeons perform Level I Oncoplastic procedures and we have an active Plastic Surgery Unit with whom all our reconstructive work is performed. In addition to therapeutic reconstruction cases we have regular combined theatre lists scheduled for the management of the high-risk/BRCA patients undergoing bilateral prophylactic surgery. Our fellow participates in a fortnightly breast surgery fellows teaching forum. Breast Surgery Journal Club is held several times a year.

The Endocrine surgery unit provides experience in all aspects of Endocrine surgery including thyroid disease, primary, recurrent, familial and renal hyperparathyroidism, Adrenal tumours, including laparoscopic adrenalectomy, insulinoma and inherited endocrine tumour syndromes such as Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia and Paraganglioma syndromes. Our Fellow participates in the weekly Multidisciplinary Endocrine Clinic, run concurrently with our Endocrinology unit, as well as our monthly Endocrine Multidisciplinary Meeting.

In addition, our Fellow will gain experience in Surgeon-performed Breast & Endocrine ultrasound and biopsy, partake in teaching and supervision of SET trainees and medical students, as well as maintain General Surgery skills through a weekly General surgical outpatients clinic and participating in acute general surgery on-call in a junior consultant role. Fellows are expected to undertake a research project during the year.  The unit has breast care nurses.

Summary Hospital Information

Breast Oncoplastic Surgery:

Approximately 25 cases per year

Breast Reconstruction Surgery:

20 - 30 cases per year in conjunction in Plastic Surgery Unit

General and Other Surgery:

Approximately 150 Endocrine surgeries / year including thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, Adrenal & Endocrine pancreas. Elective General Surgery (hernia/lap chole/minors) & Emergency General Surgery

Breakdown of hours:

6 - 9 Theatre sessions/week, 3 Outpatients Clinics (Breast/Endo/General), Fellow Gen Surg Oncall 1:3 cycle

Academic & Research:

Fellow participates in existing research activities as well as being encouraged to undertake further projects during their year. Research Assistant.

Funded:

1 year Full Time Equivalent role commencing on start date early February 2024

Salary:

Full time salary equivalent to Senior Registrar salary (or greater) and minimum salary package and requirements and conditions as required by law in the Hospital jurisdiction will apply
